APPLE LICENSES POWERTALK PERSONAL GATEWAYS FROM STARNINE

    Mac OS Firmly Established as the Leader in Out-of-the-Box Connectivity  

   With the inclusion of the StarNine Gateways, the Mac OS now provides more out-of-the-box connectivity than any other personal computer operating system. As a result, Macintosh users can take advantage of the powerful built-in PowerTalk mail and directory features when connected to the most popular electronic mail systems. 

   Effective immediately, every Macintosh System 7.5 customer can obtain these gateways, free of charge, via Apple's world wide web site:

   These fully functional gateways for the Internet, StarNine Mail (formerly Microsoft Mail for AppleTalk) and QuickMail will also be included in future system updates of the Mac OS. Apple will maintain, support and enhance the gateways for future versions of its operating system.

   PowerTalk

   PowerTalk system software was first delivered in October of 1993 and is now an integral part of Macintosh System 7.5. With PowerTalk, Apple was the first operating system vendor to provide built-in email and collaboration services. PowerTalk provides Mac OS users with a universal electronic mailbox to most communication systems they may use. In addition, PowerTalk allows users to send mail from within any PowerTalk-enabled application, digitally "sign" documents and easily share files over an AppleTalk network. When coupled with PowerShare, Apple's electronic mail and directory server, PowerTalk becomes a powerful workgroup electronic collaboration system.
   Currently Macintosh System 7.5 includes PowerTalk personal gateways for direct dialup, fax, pager and CompuServe, in addition to demonstration copies of the StarNine products. The new StarNine modules include Mail*Link Internet for PowerTalk, which enables customers to access their Internet or UNIX mailbox using SMTP and POP3 protocols; Mail*Link MS for PowerTalk, which enables users to access their StarNine Mail or Microsoft Mail for AppleTalk mailbox and directory; and Mail*Link QM for PowerTalk, which enables users to access their QuickMail mailbox, address books and nameserver.
