Apple Sponsors and Webcasts Macintosh New York Music Festival; Announces
Apple Computer, Inc.
(Nasdaq: AAPL) is inviting music enthusiasts around the world to go online and
experience hundreds of new bands at the most popular music venues in New York
City as part of the Macintosh New York Music Festival, July 14-20. The
seven-night festival will promote the hottest, up-and-coming bands and
interactive music technologies. Notably, new music reaching approximately
20,000 festival attendees will be extended to potentially millions of folks on
the Internet, who can enjoy live audio, video, chats and more.
In addition to providing the technology that makes the Macintosh New
York Music Festival webcast possible, Apple is also sponsoring the event for
the second year and announcing the release of QuickTime 2.5 for Macintosh. To
take in the festival's sights, sounds and sensations, computer users simply
connect to the leading destination for live events on the World Wide Web,
Apple's QuickTime Live! site at http://live.apple.com.
"As the computer company of choice for music production and
multimedia, we're thrilled to harness the 'Net, crossing physical boundaries to
broaden the reach of breaking musical artists," said Steve Franzese, vice
president interactive marketing and online services at Apple. "By wiring
the clubs together and setting up kiosks at last year's music festival, we
learned how to provide attendees a rich, interactive festival experience. This
year, we're going full-steam offering a 'virtual festival' to peopse around the
world." Each of the clubs will be armed with two Apple Power Macintosh
computers so that club-goers can make choices about which club to check out
next, while onliners can capture the pulse of the event from those attending
the festival in person. Live audio, video and chats with artists from over 30
clubs around the world round out the real-time, interactive experience.
Apple is making possible the second annual Macintosh New York Music
Festival by way of title sponsorship, co-creation of the event and webcasting
support. The festival will feature 450 bands at 17 clubs, and as it plays out
more richly on the Internet this year, it is expected to be the largest live
online music event in history. Last year's acclaimed event included budding
artists such as: Ben Folds Five, Cibo Matto, Buffalo Tom, Squirrel Nut Zippers
and Yo La Tengo, who are now blossoming into mainstream popularity.
Apple QuickTime 2.5 Now Available
Apple today announced the availability of QuickTime 2.5 for Macintosh,
the newest version of the industry multi-platform standard multimedia software.
The enhancements to the QuickTime Music Architecture (QTMA) will significantly
benefit professional musicians and music enthusiasts who use the Macintosh to
create music. In addition to playing through the computer's built-in speaker,
QuickTime 2.5 can route musical information to external MIDI devices, effects
processors, and drum machines. QuickTime is the standard architecture used by
multimedia software tool vendors, content creators, and production
professionals to store, edit and play synchronized video, sound, graphics, text
and music through not only traditional broadcasting means, but on a wide range
of media such as CD-ROM and the Internet. It is the only architecture that can
truly deliver multimedia content across multiple platforms.
Apple Interactive Music Toolkit Preview
This year, in addition to the webcasting activities, Apple is previewing
a new toolkit at the music festival. Apple's Interactive Music Toolkit is a
simple yet powerful tool for creating enhanced music CDs. Artists and developers
can quickly and easily author multi-session enhanced music CDs that can be
played on both Macintosh and Wintel platforms. Graphics, pictures, lyrics, and
QuickTime movies can be added to create an exciting, interactive experience for
the music fan. The Apple Interactive Music Toolkit is expected to be available
free of charge in September.
Multimedia, Music and Webcasting Leadership
The release of QuickTime 2.5 underscores the clear leadership Apple
holds in multimedia, while the imminent release of the Interactive Music
Toolkit punctuates Apple's stronghold in the digital audio arena. With the
Macintosh New York Music Festival webcast, Apple has once again collaborated
with the entertainment industry leaders to deliver unique forms of
entertainment over the Internet. Apple has garnered acclaim from past
music-related webcasts, including last month's exclusive Metallica fan-club
concert, February's GRAMMY Awards and Bill Graham Presents San Francisco New
Years Eve event. Following the music Festival, Apple's next scheduled webcast
is "Atlanta '96: Street Scene," July 19-August 4, and will provide an
alternative experience of Atlanta during the Olympic Games. Archived webcasts
are available at http://live.apple.com.
